As I read the different articles and try to take everything I know about information literacy, I still get frustrated with the gap between what I know about this topic and how to best teach the skills to kids. For the past two years, I've collaborated with wonderful teachers and we have taught kids about reliable resources, asking good questions, etc. But too often, it seems as though students just want to go through the motions and hand something in without really digging into a topic and thinking about it.
I realize that assignment design is key. We need to pull together the topic and the student in a relevant, meaningful way. I think I need to let go of my ideal - there is no perfection in this business - and strive for improvement in each lesson.
It's easier for me to grab the Web 2.0 tools and implement them. It's exciting to see how many of us in MILI are using the tools and experiencing success. Whenever I read about 21st century skills and the need for change in education, I am glad that we are trying to be proactive and not dragging our feet.
