Thing #11 - All About Google

Well, I still have more to check out on Google's page, but my latest favorites are the calendar, the Reader, and the language tools.

The calendar was a big surprise for me, because I've been trying to get everything to cooperate with Outlook. In the past, I've used three or four different calendars - a personal one "on" me, a home one on the fridge, & a work one. It's frustrating to have to cross-check dates or find out I've double-booked myself. I'm just starting to play with a Google calendar, but I already like that its printing options fit my needs better than Outlook.

The Reader rocks! Same as Bloglines, but I like working off my iGoogle page for multiple functions. In fact, I've been busy reading and responding to other people's blogs and realized this morning that I hadn't posted anything new in a while! I have been working on my other blogs, though. I'm not entirely happy with my reading blog layout . . . and am still waiting to engage with other readers / bloggers. The History Day blog with Sarah should be great - the kids are already posting!

The language tool is sweet. I've used it before, but had the opportunity to share it with students this week. Some less-successful students were in the media center to work on their German PowerPoints. They needed a lot of direction, but since I don't know German I showed them how to translate words like "weather," "months," etc. on Google. (Later, I caught them translating naughty words. . . such is the life of a middle school teacher! That was a separate issue.)

I plan to play with more of the teacher tools - these were demoed to us briefly at a media / tech meeting, and they definitely look cool!

I like the calendar, too. At first I didn't like having to create different sections (for lack of a better word) but then I saw the advantages -- I can "turn off" the personal sections to just print the work section, or I can have them all "on" to make sure nothing, as you say, is double-booked. I love the color-coding, but I wish the whole block printed that way instead of just the border.
