Thing 2 - Blogging and RSS feeds

I'm trying to be a good student like my hero Sarah this year, so I'm working off the MILI page links and prompts.

The first reading is geared more for a newbie. Interesting, but I've traveled that path. The second reading, "Bringing the World to My Doorstep," gave me ideas for using this technology more with students. Our eighth grade advisories focus on service learning. If I can find some excellent blogs about service learning and what other kids are doing, that could be a great discussion-starter for my students.

I used Google blog search to look for "service learning" and "make a difference" so that I could add relevant blogs to my Reader. I've added a few in a new category called "Advisory" so that I can share service project ideas and thoughts with my advisory students. The coolest one I saw was from a ten year old! Check it out at http://twentyfivedays.wordpress.com/ and see what this little girl is doing!

I'm going to watch the videos later and blog about them separately, since I don't want to crank the volume in here and distract everyone.

As far as the RSS / Reader stuff, I love my Google Reader and use it faithfully! If I have a huge "Aha!" moment, I'll blog about it later.

I looked for relevant Edublogs (media specialist, middle school) and was overwhelmed by the quantity of writing out there. I've subscribed to a few and will see if they stay on my Reader or need to go away. I'm a life-long learner who's struggling with time-management skills. . .

I won't answer all the blog prompts (since I tend toward verbosity far too easily), but here are some blog ideas for this year. Advisory blogging - with our focus on service learning, I want the kids to participate in blogging about our activities and responses to experiences. I expect that Kelly and I will use blogging with at least one of the reading units she does. I also expect that Sarah will continue with the History Day blog. We have a professional blog for the Pioneer Ridge Middle School (which will open fall 2009). I also use my Reader to follow a lot of blogs.

LOL! Very funny comment about my blogging. I think the idea of looking at service learning blogs is great. I am certainly stealing that idea.

Wow--you had some great ideas about how to go about finding relevant blogs out in the vast blogosphere. Thanks--I'll have to give it a try.
