Thing 4 - Online Productivity Tools

Not feeling creative, so I'm just going to answer questions. (Too excited about the Travis & Sarah news, I guess. . . plus it's bedtime and I need my sleep!)

Q: Which customizable homepage did you choose? Why did that one appeal to you? Will you make it your permanent home page?

A: iGoogle! Because I already use so many Google tools that it's a logical jumping-off point for me. Plus Google is my #1 fave search engine. It is my permanent home page, both at home and at work.

Q:
Did you find a tool that has some uses for you at school or home? Which tool(s) would you recommend to others?
A: I like Remember the Milk for personal use. I use Googledocs for both home & school. I recommend that people figure out what works best for their personal style! I guess Delicious is the most practical one for most people. It's nice to have my "bookmarks" in one place (though I'm not done adding all my home ones to it) no matter where I am or what computer I'm using. Plus, if a hard drive somewhere crashes, my bookmarks are still intact. I think that's a tool more people need to learn to use.

Q: How can the online calendars be useful to you?

A: If I could get my Treo & Outlook to be consistently compatible AND to print out a hard copy in a format I like, then I'd be in heaven. I love the concept, but have not yet been able to do a seamless integration of my many, many calendar systems. It's a constant frustration.

Q: What about the To Do Lists -- helpful? too much work?

A: Love them! And I know it's counter-intuitive, but I print out my Remember the Milk list for two reasons. One, I get the joy of crossing things OFF when they're done. Two, I like the grab & go / take it with me anywhere appeal of the physical list. It's still better than lots of little scraps of paper and to-do lists everywhere.

Q: How would you compare and contrast the use of paper-based assignments and assignment notebooks to the potential use of online assignment calculators and to do lists for students?

A: I think it depends so much on your goals for the assignment! Depending on the kind of learning you want to have happen, you need to determine the best tools to use. I think part of it has to do with the maturity of the student, too. Sixth graders are very different from seniors in high school. That said, I think a lot of our younger kids are ready for a more techno-savvy approach to managing their time and their learning.
