Thing #9 - Streaming Video

Since I'm the point person for UnitedStreaming in our building, I spend time each year helping people to use this tool. In fact, I have a standard info email saved so I can just forward it when basic questions come up. I would like to see their content continue to expand, especially in the areas of service learning and character education. It's nice to have short chunks of relevant video content.

One streaming video that I've used this year was in advisory. Lucy LeMay had shared with me an interview on Oprah with a man who was expected to die within a few months. He gave a "lecture" as a professor on what people should do with the time they have. The kids were very attentive. Unfortunately, our extremely short advisory time didn't leave us with much discussion time. I am continually frustrated by the lack of time to do anything substantial.

Anyhow, video is a powerful medium. Kids like to look & listen, especially in shorter bursts. If the content is well-produced and informative, I would like to see videos used much more frequently. A two-to-five minute segment on a specific concept can be an effective part of a lesson. I'd also like to see our students producing videos and streaming them off the school website (especially since YouTube is off limits).

What a cool idea to use united streaming in advisory. I am stealing that idea for sure! Thanks! I use it in class fairly regularly, but I love the advisory idea.
